This week school has started again, Mike started teaching new classes, and with everyone out of the house it is starting to look clean again. While cleaning up I even found some stuff in boxes I haven’t seen in at least a year and a half- like this photo of my cute kids in our Kentucky house.
Now that we are starting a new year we have a lot to look forward to and like a lot of people we are trying to make some goals and get ready for what is ahead. Here is a preview.
Abby has a lot on her plate. She already works hard at school and now is entering the science fair this month on top of her usual assignments. She is playing basketball for a city team, she takes piano lessons, she is in the Concert Choir at school, and she has told me her goal is to read the Book of Mormon this year.
Sam is still working hard at Chinese Immersion. He is excited for Chinese New Year this month because of all the activities at school. Sam is also in choir at school and he starts basketball in the Spring. He still loves video games and his goals are mostly centered around working to achieve some level on his Lego video games.
Kaitlyn loves Kindergarten. Her goal is to get into the “Cookie Club.” If she learns to read a certain amount of words she gets a humongous cookie and another surprise. She is determined to make it to the Cookie Club- she just told me so today. She also really wants to play soccer. Later this year we will sign her up.
Mike is crazy busy this semester. He has several productions he is working on including Pride and Prejudice which I am looking forward to. He will be traveling a lot to conferences this year. He is also involved in a really cool research project that will take him to Michigan State University this month and later this year to work with several people from around the country on how to make theater a more interactive experience for the audience. I don’t know all the details but I think it might include smartphones.
As for me, I am focused on moving again and trying to prepare for that. It could happen anytime this Spring or Summer. Currently we have a great family renting our house we bought last summer. They are house hunting and starting at the end of this month, their lease goes month-to-month until they buy a house and move. They have to be out by July so that is the latest we will move but we could move in March- although that is very unlikely. Housing inventory is really low right now in Provo so I am planning for our move to be later than sooner.
Personally this will be my 22nd move. Yes, that is right. Trust me, it just gets worse each time. Once the kids arrived it turned into a nightmare. Since Mike and I married, we have moved 9 times. Abby has moved 5 times but she only remembers 3 times. Starting this year, my goal is to not move again.
But since there is one more time at least, I am planning to spend the next few months getting rid of loads of stuff we don’t need and don’t want to move again. Since we sold or donated so much furniture in order to move into Mike’s parent’s house a year and a half ago, we also now need a lot of furniture for our new house. I’ll be shopping a lot in stores, but also on Craigslist and in secondhand stores looking for treasures I could fix up or paint.
Besides those things I am making goals to write more, read more, and explore graduate programs. I’m not planning to start anything right away, but I want to begin to prepare. It’s been a long time since I took a standardized test.
We are looking forward to 2014 even though we have a lot of work ahead of us. We are not planning any other big events this year simply so we can get moved and settled whenever that happens. We have had too many hectic and frenzied moves and we want this one to be more relaxed and organized. We want to take our time unpacking our stuff, painting rooms and rearranging furniture.
What are you planning for this year?
